Not My Favourite Place

Sihanoukville was definitely not the most beautiful place I’ve been to in the last couple of months. I’d even go as far as saying it was the weirdest one. It’s a coastal city with long beaches and many resorts that are currently being built.

And here’s the problem: Everyone knows the Chinese government, as well as rich Chinese people, are heavily investing in poorer countries. In Sihanoukville this is very obvious. There’s a huge rainbow-LED-covered Chinese casino right between all the modest Cambodian bars and shops. And even though there isn’t even a paved road yet, they’re constructing enormous hotel complexes that just don’t fit the style of this village. Construction is so quick that the entire village will probably have transformed into something else in a year. Even the chilled out beach bar we went to had to move three times within the last year because China keeps buying beaches and making them private.

Oh yeah, Merry Christmas! 🎄😂
