Getting up at 4:30 in the morning to see the sunrise over Angkor Wat
Like most travelers, I hate feeling like a tourist, doing touristy things because other people have done it and are now talking about it. I also hate taking the same photos millions of people have taken before me. I’ve even made fun of others I had met in the past months when they were telling me they would go to Siem Reap and get up at 4:30 a. m. to see the sunrise. And now I’m back here, playing along. But since I’m not a hater, I hereby admit that it was kind of nice.
I admit it, it’s nice.
Yeah, OK.
How the temple mirrors in the dirty water…
And how the first sun rays illuminate the clouds…
Behind the scenes
Here’s what this unique experience actually feels like
Many photos were taken this day…

James Bond
While we were all waiting for the sun to rise, the locals were trying to drag us into their restaurants: “You want coffee, Sir? Yes, yes? Maybe later? OK? My name is Spider-Man.” Somebody must have started picking movie characters a while ago and then everyone went with it. “I’m Jack Sparrow. Remember, Jack Sparrow!”
This is what the James Bond restaurant looks like. “James Bond 006, we have license to coffee!”
It’s funny how so many people here dislike Chinese tourists. Their culture is in so many ways incompatible with other countries that it often looks like they just don’t have any manners.
They do have the coolest hats though.
Waited in line for this

It’s only here that you realize you’re actually in the middle of a jungle

Sometimes you do find a quiet corner
People are touching the stone carvings all the time which coats them with a greasy layer that makes them pop out more.
Roots
Roots overgrowing buddha carvings
These roots look very alive, more like the tentacles of an octopus. It just moves a bit slower.
Faces
Faces “hidden” everywhere
Somehow creepy
… and chill at the same time
